Q & A

Why “maverick” atheism?

For one thing, I’m not convinced that God doesn’t exist. I suppose I could have instead titled the blog “Devil’s Advocate Atheism” but “Maverick” just sounds cooler.

So why put up a blog arguing for atheism? All too often I’ve seen atheism inadequately defended. Yes, there are some exceptions, but consider the debates between various atheists and prominent Christian apologist William Lane Craig, e.g. the William Lane Craig versus Christopher Hitchens debate (it start at around 13 minutes; and while it is an admittedly extreme example of an atheist presenting an inferior intellectual case for atheism, it illustrates the point well especially since Hitchens was such a huge influence in the New Atheist movement). William Lane Craig is notorious in atheist circles for doing well in his debates, and some will credit Dr. Craig’s large proportion of debate victories to some vaguely described debating skills, but the truth is that Craig usually wins because atheists fail to do atheism the intellectual justice it deserves. Indeed it happens so often I’m surprised more atheists don’t see this. So I want to do my part to show how formidable an opponent atheism is to theistic belief, even though I’ll largely be playing devil’s advocate when doing so in my posts, comments, and elsewhere (e.g. you can find me on Facebook).

But isn’t it true that you copied the “maverick” motif from Maverick Christian Blog?

Yes, that too.
